Yesterday and today my little brother David missed school to go up to Salt Lake and participate in the state chess tournament! A friend who has done the tournament before took him up. If you have ever seen the movie "Searching for Bobby Fischer", that's a little bit what the environment there was like. There was a huge room with about 40 matches going on. There is also a room with clocks to time the matches. David played in the big room the first day. On the second day all of his matches were in the smaller room. In the smaller room are the best kids.You compete against people in junior high. So David competed against 6th graders to 9th graders. There were more 8th graders than any other age group. David did super well (he even beat the kid who took third in 7th grade!)!!
And.......
DAVID GOT FIFTH PLACE!!!!! Can you believe that?! That's super impressive for his first tournament! David also qualified for a tournament that could qualify him for nationals if he does well enough at that! So cool!!!
